Construction Industry Federation (CIF) - Covid Induction Checker
The Brief
When the easing of restrictions imposed on construction sites during the COVID-19 pandemic was announced in Ireland in early May, One of the conditions was that all workers must complete a COVID-19 online induction course to ensure safe working, and with that, an opportunity presented itself for GoContractor to help get the construction industry back to work.
Research
GoContractor already operates a web app where we support the online induction of construction workers complete with identity capture, the challenge was to adapt our system and create a digital card, which is, in effect, an online virtual identity card.
While users complete the online induction from home, the system randomly captures pictures in order to allow an admin to confirm that the individual completing the course is a match to the person who presents themselves to the worksite.
CIF required that every card would have the construction worker's picture which should match the identity captured from the online induction course and the person present at the site.
The main challenges which we were presented with were:
We knew that users were not uploading their profile pictures, especially with somehow hidden in settings.
We needed to come up with a solution to avoid fraud such as people counterfeiting the card.
We had a short timeline of 2 weeks to plan, design, and develop.
Brainstorm
The profile picture was quite easy and we got to a consensus very quickly.
Users should not be allowed to proceed with the induction process unless a profile picture has been submitted during the onboarding process.
Now, to prevent fraud, it was a little more complex, we were short on time and need to come up with cheap and clean solutions, that would be easy for the workers and the people on-site to easily check that the worker had done their covid training.
• We thought of a live animation to demonstrate that card was live. But that would need the user to be logged in to GoContractor and this is not very viable.
• We could have an add-to-wallet option, but the majority would have a wallet.
Because we want something that didn’t require the worker or the manager to log in, something that even with a piece of information they should be able to check if the person on-site was the same that took the induction we chose:
Upon completion of induction training, the user's identity card is generated displaying a verification code, their name, and their picture. The user may then print this screen or save it on their mobile device.
Without the need for a login, the information is cross-checked in order to ensure identity card validity.
Even if the person only has their last name and the verification code they should be able to see if identity capture was the same as the person in front of them.
Outcome
Over 150,000 workers have taken part in the CIF induction process, at its peak of over 10,000 workers per day completing induction training using the GoContractor Application.
With regards to user experience, GoContractor customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
All those who complete their safety training on GoContractor are given the opportunity to rate their experience within the platform and so far 97% of workers have responded with a 5-star rating.
